Ramstein High School AFJROTC Cadets Honor Veterans at Armistice Day Ceremonies in France
RAMSTEIN, Germany — Cadets from Ramstein High School’s Air Force Junior ROTC unit, GR-821, honored American veterans during a series of commemorative ceremonies in France on Nov. 11. The cadets represented the United States at events held at Saint-Mihiel American Cemetery, the Monument aux Morts in Thiaucourt-Regnéville and the Montsec American Monument.
This year marked the second consecutive year GR-821 cadets participated in the Armistice Day observances, joining cemetery personnel and French nationals in recognizing the sacrifices of American service members from World War I. A wreath-laying ceremony at Montsec was added to this year’s program, expanding the unit’s role in the day’s events. Cemetery officials welcomed the increased involvement, noting that the return of the cadets strengthened relationships built during last year’s visit.
Following the ceremony in Thiaucourt, cadets attended a community reception, where they spoke with local residents about their AFJROTC program and their experiences living overseas. Cadets also toured the Saint-Mihiel American Cemetery, where staff shared stories of the soldiers interred there, underscoring the historical significance of the region.
“I was truly honored to be a part of something bigger than myself to pay respects to the ones who let us be where we are today,” said Cadet Salinas, who served as first sergeant for the event. “I can only hope their stories will never be forgotten.”
GR-821 Group Commander Cadet Pinero said the experience offered a meaningful sense of connection. “Not only do you feel a connection bigger than yourself, but it makes you realize the true sacrifices that have been made — not only by your own country, but by its allies as well.”
Living and studying in Europe provides cadets with unique opportunities to engage directly with historic sites, said Cadet Kretz, who led the cadets for the event. “I feel so lucky to live in a place where I am able to take part in such amazing history and represent not only my school but my nation as well.”
GR-821 instructors said they aim to use these opportunities to deepen cadets’ understanding of why Americans continue to commemorate the armistice that ended World War I at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, 107 years ago.
